SpaceX reiterated during its Q2 2026 earnings call that it plans to build its own terrestrial network—but not by copying the Big 3 carrier model. Instead of building a traditional tower-heavy network, SpaceX wants to leverage existing Starlink internet dishes and spectrum acquired from EchoStar to compete with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.


Telecom analysts are split: many doubt the plan is practical, while a few think SpaceX may be onto something—especially over a long timeline as satellite standards and capacity improve.


How SpaceX says it would work (in plain English)

Traditional mobile networks rely on macro cell towers broadcasting signals across wide areas. SpaceX doesn’t want to build towers at scale because they’re expensive and slow to deploy.

3) Urban penetration is brutal


Independent analyst Benedict Evans points out that dense cities with steel and concrete are the hard part of cellular—not just “coverage.” That’s why the U.S. has roughly 250,000 macro cell sites and more than a million small/indoor cells. Any new entrant would still need meaningful terrestrial infrastructure in dense areas.

There are also technical and regulatory hurdles, including potential interference issues and meeting FCC ground-network buildout requirements.


Why some analysts think it could work (over time)

Supporters argue critics may be too focused on legacy assumptions. One comparison: Comcast Xfinity already routes about 90% of its mobile data over Wi‑Fi, showing a modern carrier can succeed without owning towers everywhere.


Recon Analytics founder Roger Entner suggests SpaceX isn’t trying to match legacy networks immediately. Satellites could handle rural coverage, while SpaceX could deploy terrestrial components in cities. He also notes this could be a 5–10 year rollout, potentially aligning with stronger satellite generations and the mainstreaming of 5G NR Non‑Terrestrial Networks (NR‑NTN).
