The core problem: consumers expect SIM-card simplicity

Big-carrier customers don’t worry about hardware installation. They activate a SIM/eSIM and go. Analysts argue SpaceX’s proposed approach is fundamentally more complex because it relies on hardware deployed at residences and customers being close to a femtocell to get service.


That also means the cellular experience would draw on broadband capacity and could degrade service for others sharing the same backhaul.


“You still need antennas, radios, and permits”

Earl Lum (EJL Wireless Research) argues that deploying outdoor small cells isn’t as simple as attaching something to a dish. He notes you need a real antenna setup (three sectors) and that mounting radios/antennas on a roof can trigger the same permitting realities as conventional sites—raising the question: if you need macro-style permitting, why avoid macro sites?


Lum also calls the strategy “one of the top three dumbest ideas” he has heard in four decades, emphasizing practical deployment hurdles.


Coverage reality: low power = tiny footprint

Analysts highlight that a low-powered indoor transmitter could barely cover a single house. Lum suggests you might need multiple units to cover a larger home, which makes the economics and customer acceptance harder.


Power + backhaul constraints: physics is the boss

Paul Rhodes (Real Wireless) points out that a Starlink dish may not have enough power or backhaul capacity to support multiple cellular radios. In other words: you can create more RF capacity than you can actually feed with backhaul, creating a bottleneck that customers will feel as inconsistent performance.


Urban markets are the hardest (and Starlink is less common there)

Urban areas pose additional challenges:

  • Starlink adoption is lower in cities than in rural/suburban areas

  • service could be patchy if it depends on where terminals exist

  • MDUs (apartments/condos) often won’t allow dish installs on balconies


Amit Nagpal (Aetha Consulting) also raises a customer backlash risk: if terminals act as base stations, electricity usage could rise sharply—and customers won’t want to pay for that.

SpaceX has also hyped next-gen direct-to-device (D2D) satellites as capable of supporting broadband data and IoT connectivity. Analysts argue that if D2D becomes that powerful, the need for femtocells becomes less clear—making the overall plan feel internally inconsistent.

2) Sell what customers actually want: predictable service

  • run a 3-location fit check (home/work/commute)

  • match plan to real usage (avoid overpaying)

  • bundle reliability: hotspot/router backup + power backup + paid setup


3) Use it as an SMB/field-ops conversation starter


For rural routes, outdoor work, and remote sites, satellite connectivity is a real tool—even if it’s not a full cellular replacement. Dealers who can design a practical “always connected” setup will win.


Bottom line
