T-Mobile Friday Night 5G Lights program with $8.4 million in prizes for small-town high schools including a $1 million football field makeover

T-Mobile is bringing back its Friday Night 5G Lights program for a third season, leaning into community-focused initiatives that go beyond phone plans. This year’s campaign includes more than $8.4 million in total prizes for small-town high schools—plus another shot at the biggest prize: a $1 million football field makeover.

Football legends Patrick Mahomes and Rob Gronkowski are returning as champions of the program, and the concept is simple: schools apply, communities rally, and the most engaged towns can win major upgrades.

Quick eligibility (who can apply)

Eligible high schools in US towns with populations under 150,000 can apply through September 18 by submitting a short essay explaining why their football field deserves an upgrade.

Bonus: The first 1,500 schools to enter will receive a rally kit.

What are the prizes? (full breakdown)

T-Mobile says over $8.4 million in total prizes are on the line:

  • 1,000 schools will each receive $5,000 through the weekly “5K Fridays” sweepstakes.

  • Four schools with standout social media videos will win a $5,000 Spotlight School prize.

  • 40 finalist schools (10 each from the West, East, Midwest, and South) will earn $25,000 for their school plus a T-Mobile-hosted Home Game Celebration.

  • The four division champions will each receive:

    • $250,000

    • a Gronk Fitness gym (worth about $90,000)

    • a $5,000 “The Big Deal” student leadership award

  • One finalist selected as “Fan Favorite” by T-Mobile employees gets an additional $25,000.

  • One overall grand prize winner receives a $1 million football field makeover.

How the program works (step-by-step)

Step 1: Apply with a short essay (deadline: Sept. 18)

Schools submit a short essay explaining why their football field deserves an upgrade. Every eligible application is automatically entered into the weekly “5K Fridays” sweepstakes.

Step 2: Weekly sweepstakes + social entries

Over eight weeks, “5K Fridays” will award $5,000 to 1,000 schools. Schools are also encouraged to rally local support on X and Instagram, where eligible posts using the campaign hashtags count as additional sweepstakes entries.

Step 3: Judges select 40 finalists by region

A panel of judges narrows the field to 40 finalists (10 each from West, East, Midwest, South) based on criteria including:

  • community impact

  • need

  • creativity

  • school pride

  • overall engagement

Step 4: Public voting (website + T-Life app)

From there, the competition shifts to public voting. Fans can cast one vote per day through the campaign website and the T-Life app. Schools can earn bonus votes by participating in “Spirit Week” social media challenges.

Step 5: Division champions + final winner

The four division champions receive $250,000, a Gronk Fitness gym, and a student leadership award—then one school ultimately wins the $1 million football field renovation.

Dealer/community playbook: how to help your local school win

  • Help the school apply fast: the first 1,500 entries get rally kits.

  • Make the story easy to share: film a simple 30–60 second “why we need it” video with students, coaches, and local businesses.

  • Build a daily voting habit: “one vote per day” means consistency beats one big spike.

  • Support the tech side: ensure the team has reliable connectivity for uploads, livestreams, and voting reminders.

T-Mobile’s broader small-town push

Friday Night 5G Lights is part of a broader rural and small-town strategy. T-Mobile also highlighted its Hometown Grants program, saying it has funded 500 projects since 2021 and invested more than $22.8 million across 49 states and Puerto Rico. T-Mobile says the program has benefited about 4.2 million people, supported the creation of 2,770+ jobs, and attracted nearly $125 million in matching funds.

Bottom line

If your town has a high school football program and a field that needs love, this is a real opportunity: apply by September 18, rally the community, and keep the voting momentum going daily. With $8.4M in prizes and a $1M makeover on the line, the schools that organize early and stay consistent have the best shot.
