Dealer takeaway: This is a smart “value beyond connectivity” move aimed at prepaid customers and cash-first communities. If you serve prepaid shoppers, this is a strong retention hook: turn your store into a one-stop visit for wireless + everyday financial services—then attach accessories, device upgrades, and plan optimizations.
What Total Wireless announced
Total Wireless says it has expanded its partnership with Western Union, bringing a suite of Western Union financial services to Total Wireless retail stores nationwide.
According to the announcement, services are available in select stores starting now and will expand to additional Total Wireless locations across the country through the end of 2026. The goal is to increase access to everyday services like sending money, paying bills, and purchasing money orders at participating locations.
What’s available in stores
Total Wireless says participating retail locations will offer Western Union services including:
Money transfers
Bill pay
Money orders
Plan perk: one fee-free transfer per month (eligible plans)
Total Wireless says eligible customers on MAX 5G BYO, MAX 5G, and ALL ACCESS plans continue to receive one fee-free Western Union money transfer each month.
The company says the benefit can be redeemed through Western Union’s website, mobile app, and participating Total Wireless stores.
Important fine print (dealer-friendly): The fee-free benefit applies to the Western Union transfer fee only. Exchange rates and applicable taxes/surcharges may still apply. Money transfers, bill pay, and money orders are available to all customers at standard Western Union rates.
Why Verizon is pushing this (positioning)
In the release, David Kim, President of Verizon Value, framed Total Wireless stores as “gathering places” and positioned the expansion as a way to put community first by adding everyday financial services alongside 5G connectivity.
Western Union also positioned the partnership as a way to meet customers where they already shop and expand access to convenient financial services.
Dealer playbook: how to turn this into sales + retention
1) Lead with the “one-stop store” promise
“Pay your bill / send money / grab a money order—and handle your phone plan in the same visit.”
This reduces churn by increasing store visit frequency and habit.
2) Use it as a premium-plan upgrade nudge
If a customer sends money regularly, the monthly fee-free transfer can justify stepping up to an eligible plan.
Make it simple: “If you do this once a month anyway, the plan upgrade can pay for itself.”
3) Attach high-margin add-ons during the “financial services” visit
Screen protectors + cases (fast attach)
Charging bundles
Device refresh for customers with older phones (especially if they rely on banking/transfer apps)
4) Reduce support headaches with a quick checklist
Confirm customer eligibility (plan type)
Explain the fee-free benefit clearly (transfer fee only; exchange rates/taxes may apply)
Offer “app setup + teach-back” for Western Union app and account security basics
Bottom line
Total Wireless expanding Western Union services is a meaningful retail move: it increases foot traffic, strengthens prepaid retention, and gives dealers a practical reason to start more in-store conversations that lead to upgrades and add-ons.
