Wi-Fi Calling Setup FAQ's

What is Wi-Fi calling?

Wi-Fi calling lets a phone make and receive regular calls and texts over a Wi-Fi network instead of the cellular network. The call travels over the internet connection, then hands off to the carrier. To the customer nothing looks different - same number, same dialing, and domestic minutes are not charged differently. It effectively turns any decent internet connection into a personal cell signal.

Recommend it whenever a customer has good Wi-Fi but weak cellular at a fixed location - a back room, basement, large workplace, or rural home with decent internet. It is the first thing to try for a coverage complaint at a place the customer controls, because it is free, instant, and often solves the problem completely.

When should I recommend Wi-Fi calling to a customer?

How do I turn on Wi-Fi calling?

On iPhone: Settings, then Cellular, then Wi-Fi Calling, then toggle it on. On Android: Settings, then Network or Connections, then Wi-Fi Calling, then toggle on - the exact path varies by manufacturer. You will be asked to register an emergency (E911) address, which should be the customer's real address since it is used if they dial 911 over Wi-Fi.

Why is Wi-Fi calling not working for a customer?

The most common reason is that it was simply never turned on - the toggle is off by default. Other causes include weak or unstable Wi-Fi, a carrier or plan that does not support it (the toggle will be missing), or an older or imported phone that lacks proper support. Wi-Fi calling is only as good as the internet behind it.
