eSIM is no longer optional knowledge for a wireless dealer. With every US iPhone since iPhone 14 being eSIM-only, every counter activation now involves understanding the SIM that isn't a card. This Pro guide covers what eSIM actually is, the five activation methods you'll encounter (QR code, carrier app, manual SM-DP+, Apple eSIM Quick Transfer, eSIM Carrier Activation), platform-specific setup for iPhone and major Android brands (Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi), the major carrier preferences, travel eSIM use cases, and the common errors and fixes that come up at the counter.

eSIM Activation Carrier Guide FAQ's

Is iPhone 14 and later really eSIM-only in the US?

Yes. Apple removed the physical SIM slot from all US-market iPhones starting with iPhone 14 in 2022. Every US iPhone 14, 15, 16, and later model has no physical SIM tray at all - activation must be done via eSIM. International iPhones (sold in Europe, Asia) still have SIM trays; this only applies to US-market models. If you're not sure, check for a SIM slot - if there isn't one, it's eSIM-only.

Carrier-issued eSIM QR codes encode an SM-DP+ server address and an activation code. The activation code is single-use - the SM-DP+ server marks it consumed the moment it's scanned, regardless of whether the activation completes successfully. If anything interrupts the process (Wi-Fi drops, phone restarts, customer cancels), the QR is dead and the carrier needs to issue a new one. Always verify Wi-Fi stability and customer commitment before scanning.

Why are most eSIM QR codes single-use?

What's the easiest way to transfer eSIM between two iPhones?

Apple eSIM Quick Transfer - a wireless device-to-device transfer over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi that doesn't require any carrier interaction on supported carriers. Both iPhones must run iOS 16 or later and be signed into the same Apple ID. On the new iPhone, choose 'Transfer From Another iPhone' during eSIM setup; the old iPhone confirms with a verification code; the eSIM moves over. Supported by all three major US carriers and most MVNOs.

What's the difference between 'Turn Off This Line' and 'Delete eSIM'?

'Turn Off This Line' temporarily disables the eSIM line - useful for travel (toggle off the US line, toggle on a travel eSIM, toggle back when home). The profile stays on the phone and can be re-enabled with one tap. 'Delete eSIM' is permanent - it removes the profile from the device entirely, and the customer must contact the carrier to get a fresh QR code to reactivate. The two buttons are next to each other in iOS Settings and customers regularly tap the wrong one - mention the distinction during setup.
