Verizon Wireless: To Retire CDMA Network on January 1, 2020

August 1, 2019

This year, wireless carriers are making the move to 5G network. And as this transition is being done, wireless providers are doing their best to make the transition as seamless as possible. Verizon Wireless is one of the providers who are ensuring this happens smoothly.

Earlier today, Verizon Wireless revealed some updates to its CDMA network. More importantly, how it is retiring CDMA network in lieu of HD Voice LTE network.

According to the wireless carrier, Verizon will no longer be permitting any 'Like-for-Like' device changes under CDMA network. This means that devices that have 3G and 4G non-HD Voice will no longer be allowed starting January 1, 2020.

The restriction also includes transferring of service, BYOD of CDMA device, swapping one CDMA device for another CDMA device, and roaming outside of the US. The restriction does not affect suspensions, number changes, upgrades to compatible 4G or 5G devices, and the new line activation of 4G or 5G devices.

In addition to this, Verizon will be moving all devices to its HD Voice LTE network starting January 1, 2021. This means that Verizon CDMA network will only be available until December 31, 2020. Service requests for CDMA devices will not receive limited support. Its users will be encouraged to make an upgrade to newer technology.

The changes after 2021 will affect 3G-only devices, 4G LTE smartphones that do not support HD Voice, CDMA connected devices, and proprietary customer built 3G equipment.
