Selectel Brings Back Roaming for $5/Month Extra

May 25, 2018

Unlimited domestic voice roaming (aka, the "postpaid network" or the "extended network") was a key Selectel Wirelessfeature when the Verizon MVNO launched in 2013.  Selectel generated a lot of buzz back in the day as the only prepaid operator to offer unlimited domestic voice roaming on Verizon at no extra charge.

Selectel discontinued roaming in March 2017. Rumor has it that Verizon  stopped allowing its MVNOs to offer roaming.

Yesterday Selectel launched five new plans that include off network domestic voice and SMS roaming plus calling and texting to Canada and Mexico. The new plans require an LTE capable phone and cost $5 per month more than comparable legacy plans without roaming and Mexico and Canada calling and texting. The legacy plans are still available. Here's Selectel's full plan lineup:

  • $15/month - 300 minutes, unlimited texts, 50 MB data (3G phones only)

  • $20/month - 500 minutes, unlimited texts, 50 MB data (4G phones only)

  • $25/month - 500 minutes, unlimited texts, 50 MB data, domestic roaming and calls and texts to Mexico and Canada included (4G phones only)

  • $30/month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 1 GB at high-speed

  • $35/month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 1 GB at high-speed,domestic roaming and calls and texts to Mexico and Canada included (4G phones only)

  • $40/month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 6 GB at high-speed

  • $45/month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 6 GB at high-speed domestic roaming and calls and texts to Mexico and Canada included  (4G phones only)

  • $50 per month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 10 GB at high-speed

  • $55 per month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 10 GB at high-speed domestic roaming and calls and texts to Mexico and Canada included  (4G phones only)

  • $70 per month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 15 GB at high-speed

  • $75 per month - unlimited minutes, texts, messages and data, 1st 15 GB at high-speed domestic roaming and calls and texts to Mexico and Canada included  (4G phones only)

I believe that losing roaming  hurt Selectel badly as without it Selectel's plans were not very competitive. Now roaming is back with calling and texting thrown in for an extra $5 a month. The plans aren't cheap but they could still be a good deal for customers on the edge of Verizon coverage who frequently need to be able to make calls on U. S. Cellular or a regional operator.

If it's true that Verizon was responsible for ending unlimited voice roaming on MVNOs then it looks like Verizon had a change of heart and that means that other Verizon MVNOs might also offer roaming  A prime candidate is Boom Mobile, a Verizon MVNO that began offering unlimited roaming in 2016 and lost it around the same time Selectel did.

Note, that if you only need a little roaming, Selectel's legacy plans allow domestic roaming at 25¢/minute, paid for by adding a $10/month Flex Card. Flex Card balances never expire. There's no extra charge for sending or receiving texts while roaming on any Selectel plan.
