Telecom competitive intelligence firm Wave7 Research, has released its 1st quarter, 2018 Independent Prepaid Dealer Survey. The quarterly survey tracked prepaid brand distribution and sales at independent, multi-brand dealers in NFL cites. Dealers were asked which prepaid brands they carry and which were their top sellers.
According to Wave7, this quarter's winners are Simple Mobile, Ultra Mobile, H2O Wireless and Page Plus. Simple Mobile was available at 28 of the 30 dealers and was among the top three sellers at 24 of them. Ultra was available at 21 sellers and a top three seller at 18. H2O was 21 dealers and in the top three at 7. PagePlus was at 26 dealers and a top three seller at 8.
Net10 and GoSmart had wide distribution, but mediocre sales. Net10 was in 17 stores, GoSmart at 15. Net10 was a top three seller at only one dealer and GoSmart failed to crack the top three in sales at any dealer.
Verizon Prepaid and Total Wireless were cited as "top gainers" by Wave7. Both are relatively new to the independent dealer channel. Verizon Prepaid, which began selling though dealers in 2016, was available at 11 stores with a top three seller ranking at two. Total, which which started selling through dealers last year, was at three dealers and the second best seller at one of them.
Wave7 called Red Pocket, Telcel America and RokMobile the survey's losers. Red Pocket was only at two dealers. Sales of Telcel were weak and ROK was only available at three dealers.
Here's the raw data from the survey (Q4, 2017 numbers are in parentheses). Note that the Q4 survey included 35 dealers, the latest one only 30.
Once again, the TracFone brands (Simple Mobile, PagePlus, Total Wireless, Net10, Telcel America and GoSmart) dominate the results in terms of distribution. Simple Mobile was also the top selling brand. Ultra Mobile, which ranked second in sales and third in distribution, is the leading non-TracFone MVNO.
